Thinking through the importance of fostering this local connection — of supporting and encouraging local small retail businesses — brought me to the first iteration of Nearbuy.
Nearbuy is an aggregated search engine for local mom-and-pop shops. It marries the community-building experience of local shopping with the convenience provided by anonymous, one-click experiences such as Amazon. With Nearbuy, New York shoppers will be able to find exactly what they need, when they need it — all while supporting local businesses.
Over several months, the fundamental idea of Nearbuy remained remarkably consistent. The details, of course, fluctuated considerably. I created several drafts iterating on the basic idea, trying to figure out how to balance the feel-good aspect with the shoppability aspect, and how much it should feel like a shopping experience, as opposed to a mapping experience.
